Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ADHD assessment, autism diagnosis and what to expect at BNC.

Do I need a referral to book an ADHD assessment at BNC?+
No, you can refer directly; however, a GP referral is recommended as it allows you to access Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan (check with your GP). From late 2026, a small number (150) of specially trained Victorian GPs will also be able to diagnose ADHD and initiate prescribing directly without a paediatrician or Psychiatrist).
How long does a comprehensive ADHD assessment take?+
A comprehensive ADHD assessment at BNC typically involves 3 sessions spread over 2 to 4 weeks. This includes a clinical interview, standardised cognitive and behavioural testing; for children a parent and teacher questionnaires, For adults a partner or other colateral source,  and a feedback session to discuss results and the recommended treatment plan.
Do you assess adults for ADHD as well as children?+
Yes. BNC assesses and treats ADHD in children (from school age), adolescents and adults — including adults seeking a late diagnosis. We are experienced in how ADHD presents differently across age groups, and particularly in women and girls, who are historically underdiagnosed.
Can BNC provide an NDIS access report for autism?+
Yes. Following a formal ASD (autism spectrum disorder) diagnosis using gold-standard standardised assessment tools, our registered psychologists can provide comprehensive diagnostic reports suitable for NDIS access request submission. Please contact the clinic to discuss the specific documentation required for your situation.
What is multimodal ADHD treatment and why does BNC recommend it?+
Multimodal treatment combines multiple evidence-based approaches simultaneously rather than relying on a single strategy. The Australian AADPA Clinical Practice Guideline for ADHD recommends combining behavioural therapy, psychoeducation, school or workplace support, nutritional guidance and medication where appropriate.
